SMDPA MEMBERS AND GUESTS: Please join our SMDPA Western Colony cousins for a summer outing to Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Villages, 401 Meadowcroft Rd., Avella, PA 15312; the phone number is: (724) 587-3412 -- approximately one hour’s drive southwest of downtown Pittsburgh.  Experience 19,000 years of history in one day!

Your group tour will include the following:

MEADOWCROFT ROCKSHELTER: The region's earliest human inhabitants took shelter under the massive rock overhang, known as Meadowcroft Rockshelter, at least 19,000 years ago.  Discover how a groundhog led to the discovery and archaeological excavation of this National Historic Landmark.

HISTORIC VILLAGES: Three interpretive villages bring 500 years of history to life for visitors of all ages.  Explore American Indian culture in a 16th-century Monongahela Indian Village, learn about European settlers at an 18th-century Frontier Trading Post, and experience daily life in the 19th-century Meadowcroft Village.

TRAILS TO TRAINS: Explore the evolution of transportation in Southwestern Pennsylvania.  Trailblaze 19,000 years of transportation history, beginning with our prehistoric predecessors, to the early days of the National Road, to the use of the stagecoach, and finally to the development of the railroad.

Our Meadowcroft event begins at the Welcome Center at 9:30 a.m. We will split into two groups.  The first group will drive 2 minutes to the Rockshelter for a private tour and exploration.  This tour involves 65 gradual stairs with landings.  If you are unable to do stairs,  you will be part of group two.  Group two will stay at the visitor’s center and participate in a video presentation of the Rockshelter.  Both groups will meet back at the Welcome Center at 10:50 a.m. for a group photo; and then explore the villages.  Our group will also learn how to “dip candles,” which we will be able to keep as a souvenir.

We will conclude our Meadowcroft event by 1:30 p.m., before driving 11 mins. southeast to lunch at the Breezy Heights Tavern & Restaurant, 714 Washington Pike, Avella, PA 15312, (724) 587-3461.  Described as “a homey eatery and bar specializing in broasted chicken and other casual staples like ribs, steaks, fish, pizza and great sandwiches,” we will order individually off their menu.  This venue is handicapped accessible.

To register and pay online, click here:  Or complete and return the attached RSVP form per instructions, enclosing your check.  Registration deadline is Fri., Jun. 5.  For questions, please contact Pamela Palchowski, SMDPA Western Colony Governor, [email protected]
